Fireplaces
Modern fireplaces are designed to add beauty and style to your home. They are not designed to significantly heat your home. Use your fireplace with caution. We suggest that you use small fires. Large fires can cause abnormal cracking to mortar joints and overheat brickwork resulting in severe damage to the fireplace.
Fireplaces need a draft to function properly. You may need to open a nearby window before you light a fire.
- Be sure the damper is open before you light a fire.
- Never light a fire using kerosene, charcoal lighter fluid or other flammable liquids.
- Always use a fire grate or andirons so that air can circulate under the fire. Never place the fire directly on the floor of the fire box.
- If your fireplace has glass doors, do not use manufactured, synthetic or pressed wood fireplace logs.
- Close fireplace screen doors when the fire is burning.
- Never leave the fire unattended. Extinguish the fire before going to bed and when leaving your home.
- Never use your fireplace as an incinerator to burn trash.
- Never burn a Christmas tree or holiday wrappings in a fireplace.
- Never burn construction lumber that is painted or treated with chemicals.
- Store suitable firewood outside, away from your home, as it may harbor insects.
- After the fire is completely out and the embers are cold, close the damper to prevent heat loss through the chimney.
- When you remove built up ashes, be certain that they are cold. Hot coals in ashes can ignite if they are dumped in a garbage can or other receptacle.
- Have your chimney inspected annually and cleaned by a professional chimney cleaner.
